Like sunlight, emotional stress can also serve as a trigger for rosacea. However, in most people rosacea is cyclic. Rosacea signs and symptoms may flare up for a period of weeks to months, and then diminish before flaring up again.

 WHAT IS ROSACEA?

Rosacea is a chronic skin condition appearing primarily on the nose, cheeks and jaw and its main symptoms are red skin and enlarged blood vessels.

TYPES OF ROSACEA

Rosacea has 4 subtypes, and for the correct diagnosis you should consult with your doctor. The first 2 types occur most frequently:

  1. Erythematotelangiectatic rosacea: characterized by flushing and blood vessels are visible
  2. Papulopustular rosacea: causes permanent redness and acne
  3. Phymatosus rosacea: characterized by enlarged noses (typically among men), thicker skin
  4. Ocular rosacea: a rare subtype characterized by eye symptoms such as red and dry eye, sensitivity to light

WARNING SIGNS

Hypersensitive skin usually forecats the development of rosacea: redness and inflammation intensify, stay longer and eventually become permanent on skin. Rosacea skin needs special treatment and care so make sure you consult your dermatologist after the first signs of this skin condition. The most frequent symptoms of rosacea are redness, red patches on skin increasing over time, enlarged, swollen blood vessels, inflamed bumps around the sebaceous glands, irritation to sunrays and cold. In the most severe cases rosacea can thicken the tissues causing rhinophyma.

WHAT ARE THE CAUSES OF ROSACEA?

The causes of rosacea are not yet known but the following diseases affect the development of enlarged blood vessels:

  • certain metabolic diseases
  • genetics
  • fluctuation of blood pressure
  • hormonal imbalance
  • excess comsumption of alcohol, caffeine, spices
  • Demodex mites

Rosacea tend to affect both men and women and is more likely to develop between the ages 20-50. Women are more likely to experience symptoms while men may experience advanced rosacea and their symptoms are expected to worsen quicker.

WHAT CAN WE DO TO PREVENT ROSACEA?

Rosacea is a rather visible and uncomfortable skin condition that may negatively affect the everyday life of patients. Covering and hiding red blood vessels using makeup may not be enough and it is advised to specifically treat the affected skin. In the more severe cases doctors may prescribe medicine to treat rosacea and laser or radiofrequency treatments may also be a therapeutic option. Milder cases of rosacea can effectively be treated by using creams targeting rosacea-prone skin.
Maximise the efficacy of skin care products by keeping a healthy diet, eliminating alcohol consumption, avoiding tanning, sun bathing and sauna.

HOW TO TREAT ROSACEA-PRONE SKIN

When it comes to treating rosacea skin, avoid skin care products with harsh ingredients, irritating (e.g. artificial fragrances) and drying (e.g. alcohol) ingredients and ingredients that may cause hyperaemia, such as peppermint, rosemary or cinnamon extract). Use calming, soothing skin care products that reduces redness such as Schüssler Cream for rosacea-prone skin. Incorporate our Vitamin C Face Serum 2-3 times a week into your morning or evening routine. Apply it on cleansed skin before using mositurizer. Its Vitain C content strengthens the wall of blood vessels and thus may prevent enlarged, red blood vessels typical to rosacea. It may help stabilize skin’s metabolism and its protective barrier. Pay attention to sun protection, too: use physical sunscreen instead of chemical suncreams and try Schüssler Suncream SPF15. Exfoliate with a facial scrub containing skin-friendly particles, such as Schüssler Deep Hydrating Facial Scrub with Sucragel® AOF cellulose particles that delicately but effectively remove dead skin cells.
